City of Paris at the NATURANCE Festival 2026

The City of Paris participated in the NATURANCE Finance Innovation Festival 2026, held from 3 to 5 February in Brussels.

The City of Paris participated in the NATURANCE Finance Innovation Festival 2026, held from 3 to 5 February in Brussels. The event brought together policymakers, financial actors, researchers, cities, and civil society to explore how innovative insurance and investment mechanisms can accelerate the deployment of nature‑based solutions (NbS) across Europe. During the citizen‑led Nature‑Based Solutions session, Paris presented two emblematic initiatives illustrating its commitment to ecological transition and community‑driven urban resilience:

Systematic Greening of Public Space

The City highlighted its comprehensive strategy to introduce vegetation across streets, squares, and micro‑public spaces, supporting cooling, biodiversity, and stormwater management. These approaches echo broader themes discussed at the festival on mobilizing finance and governance for nature‑positive urban change.

“Sparrow Neighborhoods” Initiative

Through the creation of dedicated micro‑habitats and ecological corridors for urban sparrows, Paris showcased how mobilizing residents, associations, and planners can reverse biodiversity decline. The programme exemplifies how citizen‑driven NbS can be embedded in public policy frameworks.

Insurers as Key Partners: From Traditional Coverage to Funding Sustainable Repairs

A central theme of the NATURANCE Festival was the evolving role of insurers in supporting climate resilience and NbS‑based transitions. Festival discussions emphasized that insurance is no longer limited to compensating damages after an event; instead, it increasingly serves as a lever for proactive, sustainable investment. Sessions underlined a shift from simple risk transfer toward risk‑reduction financing, in which insurers help fund NbS that reduce future losses — such as urban greening, water‑absorbent landscapes, or biodiversity‑enhancing interventions.

The festival showcased how insurers are increasingly integrating nature‑based, sustainable repair options into their post‑event recovery frameworks. Instead of restoring damaged infrastructure “as before,” insurers now explore funding NbS‑aligned repairs that improve resilience — for example, replacing sealed surfaces with permeable green areas to mitigate heat or flooding risks. These approaches reflect emerging EU‑level discussions on innovative insurance and parametric resilience models that support ecological transitions.
